THE GEORGE LUCASSSS!!!!! so friggin amazing!! love these sandwiches. they have like 100 sammies named after all sorts of people and things. so the lucas is my favorite with roast beef horseraddish sour cream sauce (i think) grilled onions. so good. Most sammies are large enough to share if you get a whole. a half costs like 7 or 8 and a whole is like 9 or 10... im no rocket surgeon but I think i'll take the whole. really friendly staff. nice window seats for some great people watching.

SO.... I have a little story that goes with my experience at Two Beards. Before I start I have to tell you that I like gnomes. Wait, forget that I LOVE gnomes. They are literally my favorite thing in the world so don't forget it. Also it is important to note I have a dog named Lucy. Now for my story... I was driving back from Vilavicencio, Colombia and had been up/ not eaten for 120+ hours. I had almost made it to my home in the U.P. but on the third time falling asleep on the wheel that day I decided I needed a bite. (THIS WAS IN CHICAGO) Suddenly I realized it was 2 A.M. and I WAS LOST! What could I do and where could I eat?!? After hours of searching I found my car and started to drive again. By now my arms were locked into the driving position and my body started to shut down from lack of sleep. I thought about my brother dieting and a single tear fell from my eye. Darkness set in. Fast forward 3 years and I am again on my semi annual trip back from Vilavicencio. I again was trying to do the whole drive straight home thing. Keep in mind that this time I have a broken arm from an unspeakable incident and that I had spent my last food dollar on a Costa Rican meal. BOY WAS I HUNGRY... 120+ hours later and I am past Chicago. Cue typical falling asleep at the wheel, numb arms, nosebleed... ect. And I find myself 8 miles from Grand Rapids. Suddenly CRASH I wake up in a crumpled car that has hit the side rail. NEVER AGAIN I SAID!!! So I start walking. Soon I am in downtown Grand Rapids with an empty belly... I think about going to the liquor store for a pint and a nap. Instead I find myself in front of an odd squarish building with a cool glass door. I go in. Instantly I smell heaven. BOY IT SMEELS GOOD! To my surprise I see a Gnome. A Gnome. A Gnome!!!! It hits me. I love Gnomes. YES I SAY YESYESYES! In my pocket Ik find 10 dollars the exact price of a sandwich which I buy and then precede to eat at a table type counter which reminds me of home which i suddenly remember I miss. I think. Did I feed Lucy?!?!?!!?! She must have died by now. If only If only I say :( Honestly I don't know if this was a dream because I don't really remember anything about Two Beards of the food I ate.

I am almost sad that I found the "Freddie Mercury" . The amazing taste of this sandwich has halted my trek throughout the extensive Two Beards menu not to mention waking up at night craving the tasty goodness like a crack head. Almost sad .

Best sandwiches in town!! This place has fantastic sandwiches, soup, and everyone that works there is just absolutely wonderful. There is something for everyone at Two Beards, as they accommodate meat eaters, vegans, and everyone in between.

I really, really like beards. My favorite food group is sandwiches. Yes, it's an entire group. I was in heaven at Two Beards Deli. It has a lot going for it: it was walking distance from my hotel (Amway Grand Plaza); the selection cannot be beat; the Nerd Factor is off the charts; and it all tasted delicious. I wish we had a joint like this in my area of Chicago, but I can't even think of one!

One star for the idea and one for the food. Wandered to Two Beards after not being able to get a seat at San Chez. The menu is intimidatingly huge but has a lot of great sounding creations. I got the Steven Spielberg with great anticipation. It was near tasteless and the bread was so pressed it was almost like a cracker. The idea and spirit of the place are awesome. The execution, on my visit at least, not so much.

Being next to two of my favorite bars in the city, I'm surprised it had taken me this long to visit the Deli. It had been an ongoing project for some time, and I had been eagerly anticipating it's opening. Tonight, I decided to go down on a whim. First of all, I like the laid back atmosphere. Nothing too crazy going down, and the guys making the sandwiches are great. You're in, you order, and you get your food. No bullshit. I had the Hagrid, and it is among the best sandwiches I've had anywhere in the country. Even having a "half sandwich," I was more than full, but still wanted more. I really look forward to going back to try some of the others! Pros: Awesome location, amazing food, simplicity of everything Cons: It's a little expensive (for sandwiches), but you're getting great quality food

Super cute and funky, smells really good, enjoyed my freshly-made oatmeal with berries for brunch. Would def come back fit a sandwich.

Had the teen wolf, and it still lingers in my memory, so it has to be good!! Will definately be trying some of their other stuff soon.

Got the George Lucas with soup, son got the Jim Morrison. Both were excellent. Yeah, it's a bit pricey and parking is a bitch, but there's so many items on the menu that sound tasty, so we'll be back as often as we can. It was a bit sparse in the dining room when we arrived so the guys had the scream metal blasting a bit too loud on the boom box-and never turned it down as more customers came in. I didn't mind the music, but it made cross-table conversation difficult-and we purposely sat on the other side of the room from the spakers to avoid it. It wasn't overwhelming, just a touch too loud. But then again, I am an old fart...

Great selection of sandwiches, good selection of beers. Cute associations of facial haired celebrities with their food :P

If you've been to the Cherry Deli or the (now closed) 4th Street Deli, then you'll know exactly what to expect when walking into Two Beards: an abundance of sandwiches in nearly any style. It's not a mind-blowing experience, but you'll pretty much always come away with a super tasty sandwich in hand (unless you're just bad at knowing what you like on a sandwich). Give it a try!

I work down the road from this place and I've been there a couple times now. Very good! I've had "The Anchor" and "The Hagrid." They were both good but The Hagrid was out of this world. Be prepared to wait a while to order if you go right at lunch time.

This place is AWESOME. Came here on a week-day around noon for lunch. There was a short line but we ordered quickly and the place wasn't too busy. They have a HUGE menu and I really like that it is organized by the type of protein for the sandwhich (aka a vegetarian section, turkey section, ham section, etc). I ordered a chicken variety and the person with me ordered a turkey sandwich. They have a wide variety of breads and rolls for their selections as well, and you can change the bread for any sandwich as well! As someone who works in downtown for the past 2 years this one visit has shot this to the top of my "lunch spots" list and I would highly encourage anyone to give it a shot. Love it!

Wow does this place have huge menu!! over 80 choices!! I've tried 3 different sandwiches so far and the Haggard.......soooo soooo good! I was splitting that sandwich with my bf and I ate most of it, I couldn't stop!! ;) the only problem is the parking...of course, it's downtown!

Excellent selection of tasty sandwiches. The half sandwiches are typically all one would need to be full. The price is a little expensive, but not unreasonable.

One of the best, if not the single best sandwich shop in Grand Rapids. They have a large menu of available sandwiches, all named after famous entities with beards (some actors, some fictional characters, cartoon characters or even monsters.) The menu is nicely broken down by the primary protein source and most sections have a "grilled" and "cold" sub-section, making it easier to choose. Their sandwiches are fairly large. Perhaps not quite as large as those at Schnitz Deli, but they are expertly crafted and easily the tastiest in the city. Under the Sausage Sandwich section, one of my favorites is The Silent Bob: sweet curry sausage, fire roasted apples, cherry apple mustard and carmelized onions - excellent! Under the Corned Beef and Pastrami section is The Klingon: Pastrami, salami, sauerkraut, Austrian Swiss, horseradish mayo and Russian dressing. Amazing marriage of flavors! ("Soj 'ey" if you want the review in Klingon. It does say "nerd" in my profile...) Most of the sandwiches are under $10, which is quite reasonable and less than what I typically spend at Taco Bell. I have yet to have anything here that was not fantastic. Throw in an ample dining area and friendly staff and you have an easy 5 stars.

The good: Huge seating area, so no wait. The Fred Sanford! Craft sodas. Punch card. The ok: Ambiance. Service (the girls at the counter seemed nice but jaded). The bad: Prices--pretty high! The portions were on the smaller side.

Huge menu, funny items names and delicious food. I did walk in thinking the menu would be like its sister store, Cherry Street Deli, but I was wrong. I knew walking in I would walk into a place with a menu that doesn't seem to every stop, with tons and tons of options. I think this is a positive and negative for them. On the positive side, anyone can walk in and find something they life. On the negative side, it is like surfing the television, toooo many choices. You always think the next item will sound better so you just keep looking. If you find a item that sounds good, get it. You can always try something that falls after that on the menu next time. Don't leave there feeling like you missed out. Leave there will a smile on your face, because the food is that good when you make up your mind! The big reason I didn't come to Two Beards sooner is because of the parking situation. It is in a great location if you are downtown a lot but if you are trying to just go eat at Two Beards the parking can be a pain.

Good food in a pleasant, clean space, with a fun and inventive menu. I ordered the Chewbacca sandwich, a veggie concoction of roasted mushrooms, zucchini, red peppers and pesto mayo on pretzel bread, which was tasty. The basic green salad was fresh and delicious; I went with the sun dried tomato vinaigrette and was very happy with that choice. Service is friendly and helpful, and (bonus) they're open on Sunday, when Grand Rapids gets a little sleepy.

This is the best sandwich shop that I have been to in Grand Rapids. The menu is huge, I ordered a Sanford which is very big and very good. Try the potato salad also, it's fabulous

amazing sandwiches!!! the Fred Sanford is the way to go. I am telling you this food is way better than zingermans deli in Ann Arbor!! the portions are also a plus if you enjoy food as much as I do:)

A great stop if you are looking for a quality sandwich. Two Beards Deli has a huge selection of sandwiches to choose from including vegan options. All of which you can get on their gluten-free sourdough bread or hoagie roll if needed. I ordered the Silent Bob Sandwich ($8.96 w/ tax). Sweet curry sausage with thick roasted apples slices, red peppers, caramelized onions and cherry sweet apple mustard on toasted GF sourdough bread, delicious! All wrapped up in two thick layers of butcher shop paper to keep it hot. Ingredients tasted fresh and the sandwich was well balanced and full of flavor. Two Beards Deli is Located off Commerce Ave across the street from Stella's Lounge. Seating is available at their window front counter or table tops. An excellent choice for quality food in the Downtown Grand Rapids area.

So glad we stopped in Grand Rapids on our way to the UP! Two fantastic sandwiches: the Hollywoodian (why have I never put coleslaw on rye before) and the Dom Delouise. It's not cheap but it's great value with huge sandwiches you could split if not super hungry.

  • Rhonda D.

I love Two Beards. Not only is the menu awesome in naming the sandwiches, so is the food. Their Gandalf is my ultimate fave as it has artichokes! The breads for the sandwiches are always fresh and tasty as well. We often go here with our Vegan AND Gluten free inlaws. They have a nice variety for those with different dietary needs...including the soups and salads. I would highly recommend checking them out for lunch or dinner.

It's the best damn sandwich place in Grand Rapids. If you're going anywhere else for lunch you're making a mistake.

  • Bernadene F.

I had #26 the Shaft with roast beef, sautéed mushrooms, carmelized onions, smoked cheddar and Parmesan mayo along with a cup of spicy crab chowder. I only had half a sandwich which was more than plenty. I loved the bag of homemade croutons for the soup. All I can say is FABULOUS. I'll be back. It is a deli so if you're looking for a full service place, keep walking, but you'll be sorry you didn't stop.

I'm in town for two days for the Retail Success Summit with Bob Negan. Great events deserve great lunch. So I Yelped this place and it's the real deal. They have seriously dozens, probably close to 70 or 80 sandwich options, all named after beards or famous folks with beards or other facial hair. I ordered the Zappa (Frank), it was killer. My buddy ordered the Van Dyk, it looked even better. I think I'll try that tomorrow. The "small" size is plenty. Great, service and delicious.

I had a George Clooney and my husband had a Fred Sanford on wheat as a panini sandwich. Very good! The service was excellent....very friendly. The only thing was trying to find parking but, that doesn't matter will be going again soon.

Deliscious and fresh ingredients. Not for the indecisive person. Many options! I had the Morgan Freeman. Very good!

Best sandwich shop in GR. The "Steven Spielberg" is phenomenal, I've ordered it 3 times now regardless of the fact that there are about 200 sandwiches on the menu. Awesome customer service as well.

  • Kari Z.

This is supposedly by the same people as Cherry Street Deli so I expected excellent and got ho-hum. My sandwich was very soggy and not very toasty like a normal panini. It is on the pricey side just like cherry street but at least there the food is better. Service was OK.

So many menu options! Its hard to make a decision. Lunch is pretty busy on the week days and the line can get pretty long. Good idea to scope out the menu and know what you want before you get there. Sandwiches are good, but pricy. A half sandwich is a still pretty large and comes cut in 2 so splitting with someone is a good option too.

  • Josh B.

My favorite sandwich spot in GR! They have a huge selection of unique and basic sandwiches. As well as some great salads and soups! The atmosphere is laid back and fun. All of the sandwiches are numbered and named after a historical figure, celebrity, etc.. My fave is the King Leonidas! I would recommend a half sandwich as it's the size of a standard. I can't imagine how large the "whole" is! You can't go wrong with anything at TB's!!

  • Leon B.

I really really wanted to love this place. Its high ratings on Yelp and expansive menu had me looking forward to Two Beards since I arrived in GR. And, sandwiches, man. I mean, they're so delicious and they are pretty hard to screw up. Now, I'm not accusing Two Beards for screwing things up. It's just that they didn't meet my high expectations. Perhaps some of it was my fault because I waited an hour or so to consume my food. But still. Ok. I'll start from the top. I walked the 0.7 miles (thank you, Google Maps) from my hotel, the JW Marriot, to Two Beards Deli. It's Monday evening and the place was dead. The young lady at the counter, who where I come from would have been a stuck up, know it all hipster, was very pleasant! I'm thinking "ok, this is going to be everything my fellow Yelpers said it would be." I was craving the sweetness of bbq sauce on my sandwich so I quickly settled with The Zappa. BBQ pulled turkey, red onion, muenster, pickle bits, brown mustard, and a bbq mayo? Sold. When asked if I wanted anything else, I eyed the pasta salad and chips, but ended up deciding a soup fit tonight's bill. I asked about a few of the options and was told the tomato soups they have are both very good. Easy sell. I LOVE tomato soup. I decided to go with the Deli Tomato, which has meat in it. I waited for my food to be made and packed up - only a few minutes - and I was on my way. I got back to my hotel room and decided to wait a bit to bust out my dinner. My spirits matched my expectations at this point. I was excited to see if this place had any bite to its bark. Boy, was I disappointed. While my soup was chock full of meat and flavor, it was also very salty. It did come with toasted points that were a nice addition, but did nothing to cut the salt. Now, The Zappa. First of all, it was wrapped in enough butcher paper for 2 to 3 sandwiches. Add that to the styrofoam soup container and I was a bit turned off. Anyway, I finally unwrapped my sandwich to find that it was hardly half as appetizing as it had been described (by the menu and my fellow Yelpers) to be. The turkey was cubed and I don't think I eyed a single onion. The yellow mustard was visible, but there was no sight of any of that bbq mayo I was so looking forward to. To add insult to injury (now I'm being dramatic), the sandwich was hardly stuffed. Come on, for $10 you can do better! There was more bread than the good stuff and I was sad. As you can imagine, the taste matched the sandwich's appearance. While the pickle bits were a nice addition, they would have been so much tastier with a complementary bbq sauce, but we have already been over that. None of the heat or toastiness was retained during the interim between its construction and my eating it. That also made me sad. I was expecting it to be somewhat warm, but I should have known to request it a tad extra toasty. Oh well. My bad. Anyway, portion sizes are plentiful, as described. The cost does match the size, however. The place is clean and the service is good. Maybe next time I'll eat in store so I can ask for missing condiments and eat a warm panini the way it's meant to be eaten (warm). Better luck next time?

The Anchor with the Dog n Suds root beer is delicious! The sandwiches are pretty large, I got a whole so I had leftovers. Great spot in GR.

Such a great sandwich shop! I was in from out of town with friends and we were so excited to find a place with so many vegetarian and vegan options. The staff was friendly and helpful. The dining area is clean and comfortable. My sandwich "the Charles Darwin" was delicious! I'll definitely be coming back next time I'm in town.

  • Matt D.

My girlfriend and I stopped here for a light dinner before a concert downtown. We were very delighted with the selection of sandwiches offered. All named after beards, too, for some added humor. I went a cuban chicken sandwich (blanking on the beard name). It was delicious and more than enough to get me hungry. The funny thing is that I had ordered a 1/2 sandwich. I can't even imagine how large the full order is! Plenty of space in terms of tables and chairs. It is set up in kind of a walk-up-and-order fashion. Most sandwiches ranged above $8.00, but like I said, they are huge. Plus they are incredibly tasty, so yes, come here for lunch/dinner and enjoy a handcrafted sandwich at Two Beards Deli

  • Justin L.

Found myself in Grand Rapids when the band I'm on tour with stopped there. They got us 2 Beards for lunch. I was amazed at the abundance of veg options. Come dinner, I decided to go there myself. My sandwich then (Darwin) was even better! Definite must-go spot for non-meat-eaters like myself!

  • David M.

HUGE menu, so it might be overwhelming. But I can say this- you won't be disappointed. I have to stop here every time I'm in GR. Evil Spock calls my name! (The food is amazing, is what I'm saying.)

  • Mark V.

Meh. It was very boring for a vegan diet. It sounded great but the food was not on par. The meat eaters in my party agreed. Plus, no decent beards in attendance other than mine.

I come to Two Beards all the time for lunch. Never been disappointed by the food and the portions are huge!

Awesome sandwiches - I'm on the fence about the service, and the prices. OK, so I've been here three times. The first two I had no problems, awesome sandwiches, great friendly people working (the same guy and girl working each time). However, the last experience I had left a very bad taste in my mouth and is the primary reason I'm writing this review. Let's start with the fact that their website (and this Yelp page) still states that they are open from 7am-10 pm 7 days a week. Apparently, they now close at 4 pm on Sundays. So, I am vegan and my boyfriend is not. I have an incredibly hard time getting him to try new places, but after coming her twice and raving about it, and after reading all of the awesome online reviews, he decided to give it a try last Sunday. We walked in with our 14 month old and all of the gear that accompanies a baby, grabbed a couple of menus and sat down at a table to decide what we wanted, all while the girl working swept around us (including sweeping under my boyfriend's chair while he was sitting there, which we both thought was rather rude). After about 5 minutes, we went up to the counter to order. Now, the same girl who saw us come in and set all of our stuff down at a table and swept around us was up at the counter to take our order. (The two present this Sunday were not the same two that were there on my previous visits). I ordered, and the first thing she says is "OK, that will have to be to go, because we're closing." Huh?? First of all, I had just checked their website before we came and I knew it said they were open until 10. Second of all....you just saw us obviously sit down at a table and bring a high chair over and let us look over the menu, but didn't decide to tell us this until we're ready to order?? OK. So, obviously with a baby we're not really prepared to just take our stuff to go and find someplace to eat it...we chose to go across the street to Stella's instead. I said I have only been there on a Saturday before, and didn't realized they closed early on Sundays...she made no mention of the fact that it was a recent change, etc. I thought maybe I read their website wrong, but nope...it definitely still says they are open until 10. But, the worst part was when I got outside I checked my watch and saw that it wasn't even 4 pm yet...it was only 3:45! The two times I had eaten there previously, it had only taken at most 5 minutes for them to make my food, so we most likely would have been served before closing. I have never before been to a restaurant that refused to let customers eat in if they arrived before closing, even if it meant they might not finish their meal until after that time. At most we may have been there 10-15 minutes after close. What really stinks is the fact that I wanted my boyfriend to love this place as much as I do, and now I don't know if I'll even be able to get him to go back again. Very disappointed.OK, so now for the good. On my prior two Saturday visits, there was a very friendly male working at the counter, and an equally friendly female working around the bakery area. I get the impression if they were working on Sunday we would have had an entirely different experience. Their vegan sandwich selection is quite large, which I appreciate. The first time I came in, I had the Allen GInsberg, which is basically like a vegan BLT. OMG, it is heaven on bread....very salty, but so is a regular BLT, so I can't complain about that. House made seitan bacon, lettuce, tomato, and some type of flavored veganaise on to-die-for rosemary sourdough bread. I go the half, but would definitely get the whole next time...not because the half wasn't enough, but it was so good that I resented having to share with my 14 month old (lol, not even kidding.) The second time, I got the Dr. Zaius, which is kind of like a twist on a vegan Reuben...house made falafel cake, with some yummy slaw, russian dressing on a light rye. It was delicious, but my baby wasn't a fan of the russian dressing (more for me, baby!) and it just doesn't compare to the Allen Ginsberg.Prices are slightly high for the size of the sandwich....about $8.45 for a half of the Allen Ginsberg, I believe, and close to $10 for the whole....it's not a huge sandwich. However, I think the vegan sandwiches are priced a little higher than the other selections. Vegan cupcakes are delicous, and they have had a different flavor every time I have been in, as well as at least one vegan baked good AND the cupcakes are only $1.50 apiece! That is a deal!! Overall, I would recommend still Two Beards, as their menu is extensive enough to please pretty much anyone, and I have had great service two our of three visits. I'm hoping the one bad experience was a fluke. :)

One of the very best additions to our little corner of the world. I've been here a dozen times and have left extremely happy each and every one of them. An expansive yet diverse menu offers what I can fathom not a single disappointment. I've had several different sandwiches/soups and have been elated with each. The Al Gore sandwich wrap is my recent front runner. An amazing feta spread surrounding mixed greens, turkey, dried cherries and spiced walnuts. Texture and flavor perfection for real. Pasta salads found in the cooler are great as are the vegan cupcakes. Prices are very fair and portions are extremely generous. Half a sandwich seems like a full, I promise. Extremely pleasant, friendly and helpful staff. Very welcoming. Non-pretentious.

Great, fun place! Huge menu with everything and anything you could want. The Leonidas is my guilty pleasure. The Soul Patch is an amazing salad. Seriously I can name so much more. It is a goal to try all of them, but I probably won't ever be able to. Seriously, HUGE menu. Must check it out!

We stop here every time we drive through Grand Rapids, and we have made the two hour one way drive JUST to come here. My kids have celiac, and their gluten free sandwich options are fabulous. Unfortunately, a new bread supplier is being used, and it is not as tasty as the original. However, the boys still love it. The variety is fantastic. The ability to customize sandwiches is great. The staff has always been great. Five stars ... Except the new GF bread pulled our rating down a bit. Wish we could do 4.5.

This is a business run by kids that resembles a slow junior achievement class! I own a business downtown and called to have an order delivered. They didn't know whether they had delivery that day or not...lol....well if they don't who does?? So finally they decided they would deliver by bike. I asked for the total so I would be ready for the delivery. etc. But as fate would have it, the morons for got the soup although we paid for it. I called the business and told whoever answered the phone. I told him what happened 3 times as he was taking orders and talking over me. He really could have cared less. Finally he told me I could come and PICK IT UP IF I WANTED!!....true story!! I didn't...I couldn't!! that's why I had it delivered. I will never go there again..........and the sandwiches sucked...all bread and very expensive! Just a couple of clueless kids.

Eaten here many times and never had a bad experience. Sandwiches are consistently excellent and provide good value. This is not Subway, it costs more and you get more. Spring for the full size sandwich and east the rest later if you can't finish it because it is definitely worth having for two straight meals!

  • Amanda L.

The menu is funny in that they have most of their sandwiches named after male celebrities with facial hair but it's overwhelming to read. Its impossible to keep any of the sandwiches straight so if you think you find one you like, just order it and stop trying to review the entire menu- it will just take you way too long. That being said, their sandwiches are GREAT! Hearty and filling, their small size fills me up for lunch! I typically get the Bob Ross, which is Roasted portabellas, red peppers, caramelized onions, gouda, tomato garlic mayo on a panini. num num num!

This place is awesome. I call ahead and place big orders for my office and everything comes out perfect. Love this place. And the people are great too. I try to go there at least once a week!

We checked this place out last week. It was a Friday early evening. Parking was super annoying to find. We drove around for about 10 minutes before we found a spot so be prepared for that. The menu was huge! So many options. They were very willing to make changes to our sandwiches and substitute other things. The sandwiches were great and huge. We each got a half sandwich and we were full. The prices were a bit high for a sandwich place, but the helpings were big and the toppings were fresh. My half sandwich was $7.50. it was fun and we will be back!

This place is amazing! I definitely need to go back again, since the ArtPrize menu is much smaller than the normal menu. Everything my party had was amazing and was a great combination of flavors. The portions are large, the prices are good, and we had a great experience.

This was the best sandwich/potentially the best eating experience of my life. to set the stage: I was stranded in Chicago after a cancelled Megabus for over 12 hours when finally I decided to rent a gigantic SUV and defy weather itself, caulking the wagon and floating it as it were. I needed to get back to Grand Haven for work. And other stuff. It was important. So I made it to St. Joseph before things got wacky and the crying/cheek biting/sliding through red lights began. I'd been screaming the words to every Owen song on my iPod, but I shifted to NPR and suppressed sobs for those two dreadful hours/40 long miles en route to Grand Rapids. I made it to the airport an hour later than I was scheduled to return my car (and the tank was really not as full as they ask for it to be) feeling like a slinky. I stopped in the airport bathroom and changed my clothes and realized my bones were sticking out because all I had eaten in the past 48-100 hours (lost track) was a handful of Twizzlers bites (and I ralphed in a Union Station bathroom from anxiety & general disgust for humanity sometime early in the night). I washed my face and waited for a cab to the Amtrak station (where I parked my car, about 10 miles away). A tall skinny girl who looked unfairly like she did NOT just get off a plane said she was going downtown and without asking either of us if we wanted to split fare, the concierge shoved us both in a car. She tried talking to me before she realized I was weird. She seemed snobby but she paid the cab fare and I didn't really protest as much as my mom taught me I should. The cab driver dropped me off about a mile away from my car because he said he couldn't drive any farther "in this weather." I tipped him too well and he didn't say thank you and I sat in my car with the heat blasting the snow away, apologizing & catching up with an ex-boyfriend on the phone. I trudged to the Pyramid Scheme, where I was supposed to see Modern Baseball with someone I was anxious (unprepared) but happy to see but he'd (too wisely) stayed in Lansing which put the words to "Hours Outside in the Snow" in my head. So I was early and alone and hadn't eaten enough to drink that fact away. I figured - at 8:00 in West Michigan on a Sunday, one of the most disastrously snowy Sundays I had seen, nobody would be open. But a nearby golden light had me sleepwalking just down the street to this place. I didn't notice the name, I just saw there was soup and that sounded like a dream to my sad lonely empty stomach. But once I was in, I smelled sandwiches and decided that I needed a sandwich. I was worried about human interaction in this mental state so I apologize that I was probably acting strangely (not to mention the way I looked) but the cashier was so friendly. I asked what his favorite sandwich was and he said it changed often but he pointed to something that was warm and vegan so I said yes please. He gave me an old CD that represented my order physically which I enjoyed. It was like $8 I think. I had some water. While I was there, at least three people asked for water and he just said, "Ok." They would stare silently until he said, "The cups are here and the water is on tap over there." It was pretty quiet, but again it was a late and terrible Sunday night. I found a People magazine that was entirely in Spanish and half-read it in the corner. Honestly if you want to know about food & the things that make it delicious I couldn't help you. But this sandwich was the best feeling in my stomach I think in my whole life. It had falafel on it, and I think some roasted peppers, and maybe some kind of sauce, I don't even know. It meant a lot to me. When the cashier brought my sandwich he said, "Here you go, buddy." I loved that. The bathroom was very clean. I talked to someone from an opening band for like 20 minutes at the show and left around 9 after the first 13 opening bands. I fell asleep in my apartment and dreamed about the color orange.

The menu is impossibly large to go through but the food is so good. The sandwiches are fresh as are the ingredients. There's tons of alternatives for our vegan/vegetarian friends. The prices are a bit but I don't mind them, think of them as an expensive Subways that doesn't suck ever. The staff was able to help me choose and my experience was terrific. Overall a great lunch with friends downtown.
